Why do so many new agents drop out of the industry in a few years?

Are you new to the real estate industry? Maybe you’ve been an agent for a while, but you feel like you’ve never really found your footing? The truth is that most agents don’t make it in this business and end up going back to a nine-to-five job. We want to explain why these agents fail and how you can avoid their mistakes. 

There are two main reasons why agents fail. First, they don’t treat real estate like a real job. Sure, you have greater freedom than you would in a typical career, but you still need to consistently put in the work. Second, they don’t have the resources to succeed. You can grind all day trying to find leads, but if you don’t have the necessary resources, you won’t get far. 

As an agent, you need accountability. Many people get into the business for the freedom to create their own schedules. This is a fantastic perk, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. If you take too many days off and only work a few hours a week, you’ll be out of the business soon.

However, putting in the work doesn’t always guarantee success​​​​​​. Many agents learn a ton of techniques in training. Maybe they’ll try cold calls for a month, switch to door-knocking for a month or so, and move further down the list of strategies they learned in school. Eventually, you’ll run out of new ideas only to find that nothing worked. 

This happens to a lot of motivated young agents. We’ve seen it time and time again. The truth is that you can’t master door-knocking in a month—you need proper guidance. You can find success with practically any common strategy. For example, we’ve seen wildly-successful agents who only do open houses because they know exactly what to do. It’s better to specialize rather than try to become a jack of all trades.
